STEAM Camp

Category : Beautification

Seeing a relay race in the hallway of a school might not be the most unusual thing, but a relay race where kids zipped around sorting recyclables is a unique sight. On the week of July 26th at Potter Elementary, the Crim Fitness Foundation’s Summer STEAM Camp kicked off with several exercises, the relay race included. We partnered with the Genesee County Metropolitan Planning Commission and the City of Flint as we taught 3rd through 5th grade students about trash, landfills, and recycling thanks to a generous grant from the Walmart Foundation, the Coca-Cola Company, the PepsiCo Foundation, and Nestlé Waters North America.

Under the direction of the Flint Art Project, plastic water bottles and other items were used to create art installations, like the “Garbage Pizza.” The most impressive creation of all was the water bottle cottage, which is exactly what it sounds like. However, its scale was what made it impressive, large enough for the 3rd through 5th grade students to stand in. Combining the knowledge of recycling with art and fun may have seemed like a challenge, but the Summer STEAM Camp made the task look like a breeze.

While some of the children will remember the event for the free backpacks made from recycled water bottles, it is our hope that they will put into practice the recycling education they’ve received, helping Flint recover from the water crisis.

Cultivating Our Community Post

Category : Beautification

The weather has been great this summer, with decent rain keeping things green and growing. However, it has also encouraged weeds. The cultivating Our Community gardeners were out in force, cleaning and greening in preparation for prominent festivals, including Back to the Bricks, the Crim Festival of Races, and Bikes On The Bricks. Cultivating Our Community gardeners are rising to the challenge all across Genesee County. If you are interested in helping us maintain our gateway garden next season, please call us at 810-767-9696
